Dr. John Francis (1946-) is an Environmentalist, Teacher and Author.

FAST FACTS:

  • After witnessing a huge oil spill in 1971, he vowed not to use motorized vehicles for the next 22 years. This means no cars, buses, or trains, which is how he got the nickname “planet walker”.
  • He earned his Ph.D. in Land Management and has helped the US government manage oil spills. 
  • He’s still alive today, working to help the environment in different ways. He founded Planetwalk, a non-profit environmental awareness organization
  • He’s a professor, educator and author and the first education fellow at the National Geographic Society.
