Zoologist, Educator, and Comparative Psychologist
Dr. Charles H. Turner (1867–1923) was a Zoologist, educator, and comparative psychologist.
FAST FACTS:
- He is well known for his research on insects and he discovered that some insects have the ability to hear. He also discovered that bees have an idea of time and can change their behavior based on what they’ve learned.
- During his career, Turner pioneered research techniques in the field of animal behavior and published more than 70 papers, including the first paper by a Black person to be published in the prestigious journal Science.
- He was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, to earn a doctoral degree in zoology, and to be published in the Journal of Animal Behavior.
- He was an academic activist for civil rights and worked to demolish racial discrimination in academia.
