Dr. Emmett Chappelle (1925-2019) was an American scientist and inventor.

FAST FACTS:

  • Got his Master’s degree from the University of Washington
  • Discovered that bacteria can use photosynthesis to make their own food
    • This helped NASA produce oxygen in their spaceships
  • Worked for NASA to take soil samples from Mars
  • Figured out a way to use chemicals produced by fireflies to detect ATP (energy)
  • Inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame
