Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (1858-1931) was an American heart surgeon.

  • He got his degree at Northwestern University Medical School
  • Founder of Provident Hospital, which was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States
  • Performed the first successful open heart surgery in 1893
  • Was the co-founder of the National Medical Association
  • Became the first black man to become a member of the American College of Surgeons
