Dr. Marie Maynard Daly

Dr. Marie Maynard Daly (1921–2003) was an American Biochemist.

FAST FACTS:

  • She was the first Black woman to get her Ph.D. in Chemistry in the United States
  • She studied how metabolism works in the cell and figured out that high blood pressure and high cholesterol are related
  • She also made science education more accessible to people of color. In 1988, she started a scholarship fund for students of color who want to study science at Queens College
  • In 1999, she was recognized among the 50 most influential women in science by the National Teaching Association
