Predatory Cave Shrimp

August 4, 2021

Listen On: Spotify Apple Podcasts

The animal that you will learn about in this episode lives in a place that you wouldn’t even think life could exist. Alex doesn’t know much about these ecosystems, which is why he interviewed Dr. Nuno Simoes, the Marine Researcher in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. So, make sure you bring your flashlight, because we’re heading under the water in caves to talk about predatory cave shrimp.

“[Cave Shrimp] are endemic to the peninsula. They don’t live anywhere else. If you want to see these guys, you have to go and visit us in the Yucatán Peninsula.” – Nuno Simoes

About Our Guest: Nuno Simoes

Nuno Simoes is a broadly trained marine biologist and ecologist with a special interest in aquatic biodiversity and conservation, as well as sustainable aquaculture/fisheries. He is particularly interested in field studies in coral reefs, sandy beaches and other coastal habitats, including the fresh water sinkholes of the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico. Together with colleagues, he participated and co-led three research groups.

He has 20+ years of experience setting up marine biodiversity census in tropical coastal and marine habitats. This includes field work sampling in remote locations from shallow to deep environments, expert taxonomic network knowledge for sample processing, biodiversity data standards and inter-operability, analytical statistics trend analysis, data visualization and broad science communication skills. He has dedicated his professional life to work on marine biodiversity on all scales, from local, regional, national and international scale projects.

He teaches undergraduate courses on Coastal Zone Management and Biodiversity Conservation, plus post-graduation courses on Invertebrate Biology, Ecology and Taxonomy, Crustacean Aquaculture, Seahorse Biology and Conservation, along with more applied fields such as Data Management and Visualization.
